Since marble and granite are natural stones they tend to get stained easily. However, this can be easily prevented by the use of sealants.

Some granite manufacturers tend to recommend the use of synthetic oils to form a protective coating on the surface of the granite countertop. However, synthetic oils tend to leach from surfaces and migrate and therefore are only of limited use.

Most granite manufacturers tend to wax the granite countertop before they are fabricated and installed in a kitchen. The waxes used on the countertops can be natural or synthetic and usually include Carnuaba, paraffin, montan and beeswax. Waxing the surface of marble and granite countertops keeps the surface free from stains for a few years. However, the wax coating does have a tendency to wear off and therefore needs to be reapplied every few years.

Water based siliconates are often recommended for use on light colored kitchen countertops. Siliconates are inexpensive.
